Gunfire Erupts at Howe Park Sends 4 People Shot in Sacramento's Arden-Arcade

Sacramento County Sheriff's Office investigators are probing a shooting incident that occurred Saturday night April 18 at Howe Park at the moment authorities were clearing an unsanctioned gathering of hundreds of attendees.

Prior to the Shooting

Deputies first arrived at Howe Park around 6:30 in the evening after learning of subjects reportedly carrying hidden weapons. Shortly after, a follow-up call was made mentioning an alleged brawl taking place within the park grounds.

An overhead unit searched from above but came back with no confirmation of a fight. Regardless, authorities discovered that an enormous crowd had come together at the location without official sanction.

When the Shots Rang Out

Law enforcement personnel set about removing people from the park by positioning themselves around the crowd and issuing commands over loudspeakers instructing the hundreds present to clear out. Around 15 minutes were allotted for the crowd to leave.

As the crowd was being cleared that 20 to 25 gunshots echoed through the night. The shots sent hundreds fleeing. Law enforcement quickly moved to finding those who had been shot.

Four Victims Hospitalized

Ultimately, four individuals were confirmed as gunshot victims. The victims — including a female and three males each reported to be in their 20s at the time of the incident — were rushed to local Sacramento hospitals. Emergency physicians noted that two had critical injury classifications, one had moderate injuries, and one victim's wounds were minor. Fortunately, all four were expected to survive.

The Investigation

The primary shooting scene was confirmed to have occurred adjacent to the Cottage Way corridor adjacent to the local Home Depot situated at the 2200 Howe Avenue block. CSI personnel located additional spent rounds on Cottage Way. Round impacts were noted in the iron perimeter fence adjacent to the Home Depot. These findings pointed to that a shooter had been discharging rounds toward the south from the Cottage Way area toward the Home Depot store. The Home Depot was put under lockdown for a period of time. Crime scene technicians and detectives continued working for hours.

Detainees in Solano County

Intelligence received through scanner monitoring showed that a suspect Kia was intercepted in nearby Solano County. Four individuals were stopped and detained. Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies were heading to pick up the four detainees to pick up those detained for processing in Sacramento County. Video evidence established that the shooting involved two separate gunmen.
